Derek Roberts. Mystery,Novelty and Fantasy Clocks. Fig 22/27

Description / Expertise

D319.A complex and fascinating industrial clock based on the steam pump. A similar bur somewhat simpler clock may be seen in fig 22/27 of Mystery, Novelty and Fantasy clocks, page 263 and one is in the collection of The Palace Museum in The Forbidden City, exhibit 175 in the large catalogue and 178 in the smaller one.

There is a clock to the left, which is wound independently, and a barometer on the right. Below these are the doors for the “ovens” with ash trays below and between them is the pump
from which the driving shaft rises and falls, providing the power to rotate the large flywheel above. In front of this is “ The governor” which, on an actual steam pump, controls the speed at which the large wheel rotates by varying the level of the two balls.

The clock, when received, was in good order, having been in the collection of a clock-maker for many years. The movement was overhauled and the case cleaned, but not re-polished or replated.. It rests on a stippled rouge marble base with rectangular brass feet below.

Height 18" (46 cms).
