Description / Expertise

D167. Moncreif London. An impressive basket top table clock with pull quarter repeat on six bells, circa 1705.

The six pillar fuzee movement, with verge escapement, has pull quarter repeat on six bells. The backplate, which is signed within a cartouche John Moncreif London, has finely detailed scrolling foliate engraving with a soldier holding a spear to the centre. Beneath him is a shell design. The movement is held in place by turnbuckles behind the dial, brackets to either side and a central holding down bolt.

The 7" square dial has a raised silvered chapter ring with roman hour and outer arabic minute numerals. There are also half hour marks. It bears Moncreifs signature along the bottom. Above 12 o’clock is the strike/silent regulation. The matted centre has ringed winding holes, a semi-circular aperture for the mock bob and there is decorative engraving above 6 o’clock around the date aperture.

The fine case is very similar to one by Fromanteel & Clarke which is veneered in tortoiseshell. ( Plate 701 of Early English Clocks by Dawson, Drover & Parkes). It has a well executed silk backed repousse top with a carrying handle similar to that in plate 699 of Early English Clocks, formed by two female figures.

The four very well executed repousse frets to the top and bottom of the door feature four winged figures. The side frets, which have a cental glazed aperture, also feature winged figures. The four small finials to the top of the case, with foliate decoration, are particularly well executed. The clock rests on turned brass bun feet.

Ht:- Handle up/down. 16.75" / 14". (42.5/35.5 cms.)
