D411. A substantial anglaise riche gilded carriage clock, circa 1885, striking and repeating on a gong. It is numbered on the backplate 5658 and is signed to the base depose. This rare clock is one of a very small number featuring black Pietra Dura panels to the front and both sides. Gilded Roman numerals are employed. and gilded hands. The floral designs to both sides and the front feature a variety of flowers and foliage in white, brown, blue, red and yellow. A clock with similar panels may be seen in Carriage Clocks by Derek Roberts. Pages 155-156.

Pietra Dura is a Florentine craft going back to the 16th century. A black stone is normally used
for the background and the design, usually floral, is laid into this using a variety of different coloured stones. Ht with/without handle. 7.5"/ 6". (19/15cms.)
