Description / Expertise

D346. This clock, of particularly fine quality, is the most totally original one we can recall having encountered and even comes with the retailers instructions for taking care of it, such as regulating and starting it and setting the alarm. It also has the red silk label in the lid of the travelling box of Theodore B Starr of New York who would have retailed it. He is recorded as having an outlet as a jeweller at 206 Fifth Avenue from 1877 to 1900.

The travelling box, like the clock, is in remarkably good condition, still having its front slide and glass and even the carrying strap. The key, whilst un-numbered, fits the clock perfectly.

The slightly bowed enamelled panels to the sides and front are probably the finest we have encountered, the detail being of the highest order. On one side a cherub is to be seen flying through the air and touching a bird, whilst a second one sits on the ground with a bird resting on its arm and a basket to one side. They are surrounded by flowers. The other side panel shows a cherub flying through the sky with outstretched arms whilst below is a second cherub. To one side are hollyhocks and on the other roses.

The white enamelled dial, which is signed to the centre Theodore B.Starr and below New York, has arabic numerals with a tiny gold spot beneath each of them. The exquisitely executed and delicate hands may be of gold but have not been tested..

The movement, which strikes on a gong and is numbered 1815, is provided with an alarm. The enamelled (a rare feature) dial for this, is at the bottom of the back-plate and uses arabic numerals. The gilded case, somewhat larger than standard, is in an attractive style we cannot recollect having seen before, each side being slightly concave.

Height with/without handle 7.5/ 5.75" (18.8/14.6 cms.)
